Lady Colonels win big on the road, fall at home to archrivals

LadyHawks seize close game over Altavista, 7-5

The Altavista varsity softball team played two games last week. First they traveled to New Castle on Monday (May 2) to take on Craig County and came away with an emphatic 9-0 victory over the Rockets in non-district action.

Lady Colonels starting pitcher Madyson Brown picked up the win on the mound (4 IP, 2 H, 6 Ks), while Altavista pounded out eight total hits led by Gaby Green (2-4, RBI, R), Alissa Gonzalez (1-3, 2 RBIs, 2 R, SB), Micaela Whorley (1-3, 2 RBIs, SB), and Emma Andrews (1-4, RBI, 2 SB).

Last Wednesday (May 4), the Lady Colonels hosted rival Gretna in Dogwood District play with the Lady Hawks coming away with a 7-5 victory.

This game ended up a tight contest throughout, with Gretna ultimately taking advantage of nine Altavista errors in the game. Both teams combined for 17 hits.

Gretna (2-13) chased Altavista starting pitcher Madyson Brown (4 ⅓ IP, 7 R, 0 ER, 2 Ks) in the fifth inning en route to the win.

Altavista was led at the plate by Micaela Whorley (2-5, 2B, 2 RBIs), Kaycie Puryear (1-3, RBI), and Alissa Gonzalez (2-3, RBI), who smacked a solo home run to deep centerfield in the 1st inning in the loss.

Gretna was led offensively by Ava Graye Simpson (2-4, 2B, RBI) and Hailey Walker (2-5, R), while Mallory Dalton (7 IP, 9 Ks) picked up the victory on the mound.

Altavista (4-12) is scheduled to host Chatham this Friday at 5pm. The LadyHawks travel to Ringold on Wednesday to take on Dan River and host the Lady Govs from Nelson County on Friday.
