John Avery Mattox

John Avery Mattox, 52, of Hurt, VA passed away Saturday, November 13, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born August 4, 1969 in Lynchburg. John was the loving husband of Lynn Scott Mattox for 24 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Joan Singleton Mattox of Altavista, his father, George “Punk” Mattox and his wife, Dianne of Evington.

John was a loving and devoted husband, father and papa. He selflessly served anyone he encountered. He enjoyed fishing, beach trips and was a dedicated UVA fan. John was a front-line maintenance manager at BWX Technologies, Inc.

Along with his wife and parents, John is survived by four children; Ashley Burgess and her husband, Titus of Evington, VA, Seth Mattox and his wife, Amanda of Clarksville, TN, Jacey Kijawski and her husband, Tyler of Biloxi, MS and Adam Emerson and his wife, Sierra of White Plains, MD; two sisters, Angie Mattox of Lynch Station, VA and Erin Radford of Evington, VA; six grandchildren, Jaxon and Ada Mattox; Reed, Eli and Oren Kijawski; Trip Burgess and seventh, Cole Burgess due February 2022; and his beloved, fur baby, Bella. 

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at New Prospect Baptist Church, Hurt by the Rev. Brady Willis with interment to follow in Altavista Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m., Monday at Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista and other times at the residence.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to everyone that has supported them through the golf tournament fundraiser, t-shirt fundraiser, sending meals, cards, prayers and messages during John’s nine month battle with cancer.
