Florence Powell Deese

Florence Powell Deese, of 1825 Ridgeway Avenue, Altavista, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at the Summit.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Deese, of 56 years. She was born pm December 26, 1932 in Whitmell, VA, Pittsylvania County to the late Charles S. Powell and Rebecca J. Powell of Chatham, Va.

She was a member of Lane Memorial United Methodist Church, Altavista, VA. She was the president of the Susanna Wesley Sunday School Class, taught Sunday School, President of the Wesleyan Service Guild several times, Chairman of Circle 7, numerous times, and a recipient of the Life Membership of The U.M.W. Lane Memorial.

She was retired from Campbell County Schools as a Secretary/ Bookkeeper for 26 years. She also worked at Burlington Industries for 7 years in the office when she first came to Altavista. She was the president of Campbell County Secretaries Association several times. Upon graduating from High School, she attended Danville Memorial School of Nursing, also Community College in Lynchburg.

She is survived by one son, C. Kirk Deese and wife, Wanda of Haymarket, VA; one daughter, Jan C. Bryant and husband, Mike of Forest, VA; two grandchildren, Meghan E. Bryant of Sarasota, FL (Rebecca) and Justin M. Bryant of Palmyra, VA (Megan); great grandchildren, Charles Bryant  and Daniel Bryant.

Also surviving are brothers, Clyde S. Powell of Chatham, VA,  Roy H. Powell of Danville, VA, and Charles M. Powell and wife, Vickie of The Villages, FL; one deceased brother, Russell D. Powell of Danville, VA. Surviving sisters are Doris P. Ferguson of Danville, VA, Ruth P. Burnett of Blairs, VA, Jane P. Dalton of Gretna, VA, and Sue P. Boscarnio and husband, Art of Altavista, VA, and many nieces and nephews in Virginia and North Carolina.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Finch & Finch Chapel, Altavista by the Rev. Ben Horrocks with interment to follow in Highland Burial Park, Danville.

The family will receive friends one and a half hours prior to the service.
