Altavista Council welcomes new manager, bids farewell to AOT Coordinator

Town's Splash Pad earns recognition

During the Altavista Town Council’s first meeting of 2022 on January 11, the council welcomed new Town Manager Gary Shanaberger and said farewell to George Sandridge, Main Street Coordinator. Council also received recognition for the town’s Splash Pad at English Park.

Shanaberger started his new post as Altavista Town Manager this month. He takes on the role vacated by Waverly Coggsdale, who left in August to take on the Town Manager position in Strasburg, VA. In the meantime, Clarence Monday has served as Interim Town Manager since August.

The new Town Manager comes to Altavista from Appomattox, where he has served as Town Manager since 2017.

Shanaberger commented on his new role at the time of his hire, “I am excited about this opportunity to be of service to the Town of Altavista. The Town Council has a great vision for the community that is focused on good government and enhancing the quality of life for residents. I particularly look forward to working with partners such as Altavista On Track and the Economic Development Authority on important downtown revitalization and economic development projects. I appreciate the confidence that the Council has shown in me and am looking forward to getting to know and serve the employees and citizens of Altavista.”

The January council meeting was the last for AOT’s Main Street Coordinator, Geore Sandridge. Mayor Mike Mattox thanked Sandridge for his time in the town and his great service in his role.

Community Development Director Sharon Williams, AICP, informed the Council of the recognition the town received for its Splash Pad at English Park. As a finalist in the 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards, Best Park category, the town received a plaque. “Council was excited to receive it for the community and also agreed that the town should put up a banner on site at the splash pad acknowledging the award,” Shanaberger summarized.
