Hurt Elementary students

The John L. Hurt, Jr. Elementary School celebrated Veterans Day in a big way on Friday. The students put on a spectacular program. Led by principal Mrs. Kathy Lowry, Music teacher Mr. David MacPherson, Flag line director Mrs. Rebecca Layne, and Jr. BETA Sponsor Mrs. Lori Goad, the students worked very hard to honor our veterans. The gymnasium dining area and stage were decorated in red, white and blue.

Students and staff members were able to invite one or more veterans and their guests to attend. There was a great representation for the different branches of the military. The cafeteria staff served an amazing meal. Their hard work was greatly appreciated. Everything was delicious. (Veterans meals were paid for by an anonymous donor, no school funds were used) The Jr. BETA Club served cake, offered refills, and cleared tables. These young students escorted younger students to meet up with their veteran and helped where needed and were respectful and courteous. They worked hard to get their assigned tasks done.

The tribute to our United States Military was very moving. It honored our military in poetry, speech, videos and superb performances by the Hurt Elementary Chorus and Flag Line. Everyone was deeply moved and at times it was so moving that many attendees had tears in their eyes. The final performance of the day was when the chorus sang Lee Greenwood’s song, God Bless the USA. I have never experienced such sheer joy at observing these young students putting everything they had into it. A huge thank you for a job well done.
