US Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick died shortly after responding to the riot that took place in the US Capitol Building on January 6.
Sicknick was a resident of Northern Virginia. According to a statement issued by the United States Capitol Police, Sicknick was injured in the fray inside the Capitol Building and collapsed after returning to his division office. He passed away at 9:30 p.m. on January 7 in a local hospital.
Governor Northam released the following as part of an official statement after Sicknick’s death:
“Officer Sicknick was killed while doing his job—defending those trapped in the Capitol building amid a violent attack on our democracy. His death is a tragedy, and those responsible must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
It is unclear at this time who fatally injured Sicknick.
Other Virginia residents involved in the incident include Douglas Sweet of Hudgins, VA and Cindy Fitchett of Cobbs Creek, VA, who were both arrested on January 7 after storming into the Capitol Building.
