A two-vehicle collision in Campbell County on Friday evening (Nov. 25) left one dead and one hospitalized after the driver of the other car pulled out to make a left turn into oncoming traffic. The accident took place on Timberlake Road at the Enterprise Drive intersection.

The Virginia State Police are leading the investigation into the incident. VSP Public Relations Coordinator Corinne Geller reports that at 5:45 p.m. on Friday the tragedy occurred.

Matthew J. Burns, 57, of Rustburg was driving a 2017 Jeep Wrangler westbound on Timberlake Road when a 2007 Toyota Corolla making a left turn pulled into the path of Burns, who was unable to avoid the other car. The Jeep ended up on the hood of the Toyota.

Jonathan W. Campbell, 22, of Roanoke, was driving the Corolla eastbound on Timberlake Road and began to turn left onto Enterprise Drive when he pulled in front of Burns. Campbell, who was wearing a seatbelt, was uninjured.

Burns, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected from the Wrangler and died at the scene of the crash. An adult female passenger (who was wearing a seatbelt) in the Wrangler was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment for minor injuries. The State Police have not named her.

Campbell was charged with failure to yield right of way.

The crash temporarily closed the westbound lanes of Timberlake Road. The Brookville-Timberlake Volunteer Fire Department and the Forest Fire Department were on the scene.

The Virginia State Police say that the accident remains under investigation.
