RUSTBURG, VA - At approximately 4:00 p.m. on May 1, 2021, Campbell County received a call for a garage/shop on fire, located at 179 Livestock Road in Rustburg. Units from Lyn-Dan Heights Vol. Fire Department (Co. 15), Rustburg Vol. Fire Department (Co. 16), Evington Vol. Fire Department (Co. 17), Campbell County Vol. Rescue Squad, Campbell County Public Safety, Campbell County Sheriff’s Office and Campbell County Fire Marshal’s Office responded.
When the fire was reported, callers stated there may be one person trapped inside the structure, which was an 8 bay auto shop. On arrival, responders noted the fire extended through the roof of the building. Units were able to quickly gain control of the fire, and search the building for victims.
No occupants were located during the initial search of the affected structure.
In the hours after the fire was extinguished, fire and law enforcement investigators continued to search for a person suspected to be inside the structure. Shortly after 10:00 p.m., the individual in question was safely located in a nearby building, and reunited with family.
The structure was a total loss, and the cause of the fire remains under the investigation of the Campbell County Fire Marshal and Campbell County Sheriff's Offices respectively.
