On Thursday morning, May 13, 2021, at approximately 5:19 AM, the Halifax County 911 Center received a report of a shooting on Gygax Ave. in the Town of South Boston. Officers from the South Boston Police Department arrived on scene approximately eight minutes after receiving the call.

Once on scene, officers found a 22-year-old black male victim in the passenger seat of a 2019 Ford, 4-door car.  The victim, Raquan M. Canada of Chase City, VA, appeared to suffer from possible gunshot wounds. Canada died after the incident.

The area surrounding Gygax Ave. and Hoover St. was blocked off for several hours while officers from the South Boston Police Department and Halifax County Sheriff’s Office spoke with neighbors and collected evidence from the scene.

The victim’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner where an autopsy is scheduled to be performed.

“It is at times like these that we ask our community to please come forward and help us bring much needed closure to the victim’s family. It is only with the support of our town and its residents that we can find those who are responsible for the unfortunate death of this young man.” stated Chief Bryan Young.   Currently, no charges have been filed and no arrests have been made in this case.
