RUSTBURG, VA - At approximately 1:50 a.m. on January 5, 2021, Campbell County Public Safety Dispatch received a call for service from the occupants of a residence located on Red House Road. The occupants reported a housefire, and requested assistance.
Units from Gladys and Rustburg Fire Departments, Campbell County Public Safety, and Campbell County Sheriff's Office responded initially. Once on scene the incident commander requested tankers and manpower assistance from Red House, Concord, Lyn-Dan Heights, and Altavista Fire Departments.
While operating on the scene, the second floor of the home collapsed, which resulted in two firefighters falling through the floor. Neither were ever trapped, and both were able to exit the building safely on their own. No injuries were reported.
The two occupants of the home were able to escape unharmed, and the American Red Cross responded to assist.
Due to the structure collapse, the investigation into this fire was hindered; however, investigators determined that the fire was accidental in nature, caused by the improper use of an electric space heater.
