Jakob Haskins (middle) is recognized during senior night last week with his family and coaches.

After a season filled with both challenges and significant improvement for Altavista’s young varsity baseball team, the Colonels won on senior night against Gretna last Wednesday.

Altavista coach Keith Pieper said the Colonels took a 6-0 lead before the Hawks nearly mounted a full comeback. The final score was 6-5.

“The Gretna game is always going to be high energy. Both teams get really amped up for it. I thought our guys came out great,” Pieper said.

Pieper also said Jakob Haskins, Altavista’s only senior this year, was able to pitch for the first time all season. He threw 2 innings, striking out 5 batters.

Logan Nichols went 3 for 3 at the plate, Nekhi Robinson went 2 for 2 with a home run, Jordan Pippen went 2 for 3 and Jakob Haskins went 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI.

Pieper said he is proud of the team’s performance on senior night, and their hard work during the season.

“We had a little bit of adversity and we were able to push through,” Pieper said. “They showed me just how much they’ve grown this year. They’ve always got each other’s back. They’re always pushing hard, always trying to get better and never quitting.”

Altavista is scheduled to play Chatham next Wednesday, and William Campbell next Friday.
