Maintaining a thriving garden is often quite labor intensive. Monroe and Lanie Coffer say they’ve been able to maintain their vibrant flower garden for decades because they love doing it.
Monroe said he has been gardening for about 20 years, and Lanie said she takes care of the plants every day. When asked why they put so much energy into their garden, both said they want to make Hurt, where they currently live, look good, and responded nearly in unison:
“We just love flowers.”
The Coffers’ garden has petunias, hydrangeas, roses, lilies, marigolds, sunflowers, phlox, tulips, buttercups and more.
“We get a lot of compliments. ‘Monroe, your flowers look beautiful,’” the seasoned gardener said.
Coffer said he likes perennials and flowers that bloom for a long time. He said he and his wife buy most of their hanging plants from Lowe’s. They received some of their plants as gifts from friends, and have kept them alive and blooming for years. Coffer said the garden often attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and bees.
In addition to their garden, the pair is excited about a beach trip they have planned this month to celebrate their 16th year of marriage.
