Folks flocked to the Altavista trade lot last Saturday for a movie night hosted by the Altavista Area Chamber of Commerce and Altavista YMCA Arts Council.

Since the event was held right next to a baseball field, it seemed appropriate that the 1989 film “Field of Dreams” was shown at the event.

“It kind of went with the season,” Chamber Civic Committee Chair Coby Worsham said about the choice of the movie. “The ball field is right here just beside us.”

Worsham and Brynn Ashwell chair the Chamber’s Civic Committee together, which was in charge of the Chamber’s role in the event. Worsham said the YMCA Arts Council, which used to host movie nights regularly, also helped the Chamber meet the necessary licensing requirements to be able to show the movie, in addition to helping with the physical set-up process for the event.

“They were a big help in putting this on with the screen and the sound and the projector and everything,” Worsham said. “And one of their people actually helped assist this afternoon getting everything set up.”

With a giant screen and full-service concession stand, courtesy of the Altavista High School Band Boosters, it was a fairly large production. One couldn’t help but draw connections between the rapidly-assembled outdoor theater and one of the movie’s most famous lines.

“We love the theme,” Chamber Chairperson Romonda Davis said. “If we build it, they will come.”

Worsham said he was pleased with the event.

“I’d like to thank everybody for coming out,” Worsham said.
