After an extended offseason and a shortened but impressive regular season, the Lady Red Devils fought for the state title against New Kent last week. Rustburg dominated all three matches 25-12, 25-14, 25-13 to win the Class 3 State Volleyball Championship.
Senior Parker Goldstein (3 kills, 4 digs, and 3 blocks) won two State Titles in indoor track just two months ago. She said she wanted to help the girls feel what she felt when she won her two indoor titles.
“My coaches have helped and pushed me along the way to get where I am today,” Goldstein said.
Senior Anna Maddox (14 kills, 1 ace, and 7 digs) said the title is something the team has been working hard for since they began playing together. She said she is very thankful the team even had a season.
Senior Tinsley Abbot (8 digs) said she will never forget becoming a state champion in her life.
Junior Eden Bigham (5 kills, 8 digs, 2 aces), said she has dreamed of winning a state championship since she was young.
Junior Meah Coles (38 assists, 1 ace), said the shortened season played a part because the team had less time to practice, and had to make sure they got things right on the first try.
Junior Kate Hardie (16 kills, 1 ace, 8 digs), said her team has a lot of heart and has been playing together forever. She added that the number of kills she totaled for the season does not matter to her, (288 kills in 16 games) and the only thing that matters was she was there to help her team.
Coach Kristen Hardie led the Lady Red Devils to their first State title in volleyball since 1992. She said she knew this group of girls had something special.
“It was also a once in a lifetime moment being able to win a State title with my daughter, Kate,” Hardie said. “This whole team has worked extremely hard to get where we are.”
After the final serve, each Rustburg player could be heard from the bench as their teammates hit the ball. “R,” they yelled as Eden Bigham received the serve. “H,” they cheered as Meah Coles set the ball. “S,” they shouted as Kate Hardie jumped for the match-ending kill.
As the final whistle blew, the girls rushed the court and fell on top of one another, with tears flowing. The Rustburg Lady Red Devils are officially the 2020-2021 Class 3A State Volleyball Champions.
