The Altavista Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a reverse Christmas parade in English Park on December 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Despite the pandemic, the Chamber has found a way to safely keep the holiday tradition alive. All floats will be stationary, and placed along a road next to the river in English Park. Cars will form a queue in a parking lot while waiting for a turn to drive along the parade route, passing each float on the way.
“The floats will be socially-distanced,” said Romonda Davis, Chair-Elect of the Chamber. “They will not be stacked on top of each other.”
Davis said anyone who wants to watch or participate is welcome to do so at no cost. The Chamber extended the deadline to register a float in the parade to November 27.
The parade’s theme this year is old-fashioned Christmas. Davis said attendees can look forward to hearing Christmas music, and that the park will be decorated with Christmas lights. KD Country will also be live-broadcasting at the parade starting at 5:30 p.m.
The Chamber partnered with the town, Altavista on Track and the local Rotary Club to host the event. A panel made up of representatives from each of the Chamber’s partner organizations will judge the floats.
Several local businesses have also stepped up to sponsor the parade. First National Bank is the presenting sponsor for the event. Atlantic Bay Mortgage and B and B Market are also sponsors. The Chamber is still accepting additional sponsorships.
“We’re honored to be a part of this for the town, and to be able to provide this. It’s a long standing tradition, and it’s been a difficult year for everyone,” said Susan Hammack, current Chair of the Chamber. “This is one thing to wrap up this year that just puts a smile on your face.”
Those interested in having floats in the parade can apply through the town or AOT’s website, or the Chamber’s Facebook page. There are also paper applications available at the Altavista Journal for both sponsors and floats. There is no application fee. The Chamber will be monitoring the following email to answer any questions about the parade:
