The seniors of Altavista's girls soccer team

The Colonels find themselves in a unique position this postseason after a difficult year.

Altavista’s girls soccer team had its senior night on June 2, and had a tough loss to Appomattox. Though the Colonels struggled to win this year, the team now finds itself deep into the state playoffs.

As one of only two teams playing this season in region 1B, the Colonels have made the region 1B final, and are scheduled to play Riverheads on June 15. Altavista coach John Grzenda said spirits were high at Tuesday’s practice.

“We’re ready to work and give it one more try,” Grzenda said.

Grzenda also said he has enjoyed the chance to coach this year’s seniors, in most cases for 3 or 4 years.

“It’s always special to see somebody come into the program as a freshman and grow up into a young adult by the time they leave,” Grzenda said.
