Rustburg varsity softball has taken off with a strong 5-0 start to the 2019 season, young team and small squad notwithstanding. The Lady Reds may only have 12 girls on their roster and over half of them underclassmen, but those minor details haven’t slowed them down as the season has revved up.
In fact, the team’s pair of freshmen, pitcher Eden Bigham and slugger Delaney Scharnus, have played a vital role in the team’s success. Ace pitcher Bigham has notched 10-plus strikeouts per game in each of the first five games, logging 71 strikeouts already for the season. She earned her first varsity shutout in an 8-0 win over neighboring rivals William Campbell last Wednesday in Naruna.
