Once again, Altavista native Juan Thornhill is making his hometown proud, and this time he is representing Colonel Country on an even bigger, nationwide stage: the NFL Combine.
The Combine is an annual, exclusive by-invitation-only event that took place in Indianapolis Feb. 26 - March 4. It gives NFL teams a close look at the physicality of over 300 potential draftees through a series of running, jumping, lifting, and other events.
The UVA senior safety leaped to an amazing 44-inch vertical jump, the best of the year and close to the combine record. He tied for the best broad jump of the year with a distance of 141 inches. Thornhill posted a time of 4.42 seconds in the 40 yard dash (tied for 19th best overall, 3rd best among safeties) and bench pressed 225 pounds at 21 reps (2nd among safeties and defensive backs).
(While these feats sound impressive enough, they need to be seen to be truly appreciated. A google search will easily yield video clips of Thornhill’s amazing leaps.)
