The opening day of spring sports contests for both Altavista and Rustburg High Schools was delayed by a day because of wet fields. And ironically it was not because of the monsoon-like conditions Central Virginia has been experiencing. A leak in the sprinkler system flooded the fields at Rustburg High School, so instead of getting started on Monday, March 11, the season openers kicked off the following days in Altavista. The Track and Field season gets underway at the end of the month with a Campbell County meet at Brookville on Saturday, March 30.
Rustburg dominated the events, winning in softball 11-1 and baseball 11-0. On Wednesday, the Red Devils continued their streak, winning in girls’ soccer 9-0 and boys’ soccer 8-1. The softball teams met up again on Friday, with a closer score line: 9-4.
The Lady Reds also picked up a home opener win over William Campbell, 9-1. The Lady Colonels took their lumps against Class 3 state powerhouse Brookville, 13-0 in Lynchburg.
