The last time they met, Altavista and Chatham boys’ soccer battled to a 1-1 draw in Chatham. This time, they were playing for a spot in the Dogwood District Tournament, which only includes the top four teams.
The two teams fought hard for the full 80 minutes, with both Colonels and Cavaliers possessing the ball and having numerous scoring opportunities. The visiting Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Colonels responded early in the second half, with a goal by senior forward Peyton Coggsdale on an assist from sophomore midfielder Isaac Quishpe.
Between the boys’ and girls’ matches, the Altavista teams honored their seniors in a special ceremony. It was the final regular season home match for senior Colonels Travis Brooks, Cameron Cheek, Peyton Coggsdale, Conner Niblett, Alex Shelton, and Isaac Westbrook. The Lady Colonels had two seniors on the roster this year, defender and three-year team member Sarah Triplett, and German exchange student, forward, and leading scorer Luisa Machowski.
Following senior night honors, the Lady Colonels faced the Lady Cavaliers. Altavista was playing without senior captain Triplett, who was out with an injury. Nevertheless, the Lady Colonels fought hard and kept the visiting Lady Cavaliers scoreless for 27 minutes.
