ALTAVISTA — The Altavista Colonels boys basketball team played two games last week. First, they hosted Appomattox on Tuesday night and fell to the Raiders 69-52. The Colonels would trail by 9 points at halftime and Appomattox would pull away with a strong third quarter despite the Colonels knocking down six 3-pointers in the game.
Altavista was led in scoring by guards Jayllen Jones and Bailey Stinnette, who both scored 12 points, while Stuart Hunt added 9 in the loss.
The Colonels would welcome in Randolph Henry on Wednesday night in what turned out to be a thrilling basketball game in which the Statesmen would escape with a 64-62 victory. After the Colonels raced out to an early 19-11 advantage, the game would go back and forth the rest of the way until late in the fourth quarter.
Altavista’s Stuart Hunt would get fouled with four seconds left to play as he scored a basket and converted from the free throw line to complete the old fashioned 3-point play to pull the Colonels within 2. On the ensuing inbound play Hunt stole the ball near mid-court and heaved up a long jumper to win it but the ball would rattle in and out as time expired.
The Colonels were led scoring by Stuart Hunt with 17 points, Bailey Stinnette had 16, including 4 from beyond the arc, and Jayllen Jones added 13.
Special halftime ceremony slated
