Colonels Win Season Opener

The Altavista Colonels football team kicked off their 2019 season with a 28-8 road victory over Central Lunenburg on Friday night. The Colonels would strike first as quarterback Jayallen Jones connected with wide receiver Bailey Stinnette on a 35 yard touchdown pass for an early 7-0 lead. Both defenses would be stingy in the first half until the Chargers would mount a scoring drive of their own. Central would get on the board scoring on fourth and goal from the one yard line with just under a minute left in the first half. The Colonels had seemed to stop them cold, however the quarterback pitched the ball to his fullback in desperation as he was going down and snuck the ball just past the goal line for the score. The Chargers would then execute a two point conversion on a fake extra point attempt to go into the half leading 8-7. In the second half it would be all Colonels as they took control of the game scoring 21 unanswered points utilizing their team speed. The offense would get going full throttle as running back Marquel Dawkins would burst through the Chargers defense for a 15 yard touchdown run to put the Colonels back in front 14-8. Makel Stone and Tanner Cox would help lead a solid and sound defense and special teams bottling up the Chargers the entire second half. The Colonels would then get some breathing room as Jayallen Jones would turn on the jets on a 71 yard TD scamper to put the Colonels in control 21-8. After forcing yet another punt, running back Jaquellen Jones would dart untouched on the very next play for a 42 yard TD run, freshman kicker Eli Shubert who was a perfect 4 for 4 on extra points on the night closed out the scoring in a 28-8 road win for the Colonels. Altavista plays their home opener on Friday night against Prince Edward, kickoff is set for 7 pm.
