Katherine Arthur Hopkins, 84, passed away Monday, Feb. 17, 2020 at her home in Bloomington, Ind.
She was born on June 2, 1935 in Altavista, and was the third child of 15 born to James Russell and Doris Helen (Bondurant) Arthur.
She was a 1952 graduate of Altavista High School. She attended Texas Tech University and Indiana University, where she received her associates degree. She married Jack Walker Hopkins on April 20, 1957 in Altavista. They were happily married for 45 years before Jack’s death in 2002.
She worked for Indiana University in Bloomington for more than 10 years, serving in administrative roles for several departments. She was a member of Unitarian Universalist Church and the Democratic Woman’s Alliance. She supported several local charities and organizations, including the Sycamore Land Trust, the Shalom Community Center and Middle Way House. She enjoyed reading prose and poetry and traveling. She especially loved collecting the work of local artists, including printmakers and potters. One of the joys of her life was having her granddaughter, Audrey, choose to attend Indiana University. She also loved talking politics with the many friends she made in Bloomington over the course of almost 45 years there.
Katherine and Jack moved to Bloomington in 1975 and made it their home after many other stops along the way in the U.S. and abroad. Jack’s Navy postings and his academic career took them to England, Peru, Argentina and Malaysia. But they put down deep roots in Bloomington. Jack served on the Bloomington City Council, including one term as council president.
Katherine is survived by her daughter, Susan (Scott Lee) Hopkins of Janesville, Wis; two sons, Mark Hopkins of Madison, Ind.; David (Brent Crook) Hopkins of New York, N.Y.; one granddaughter, Audrey Hopkins Lee of Bloomington, Ind.; and one grandson, Anders Peterson of Seattle, Wash.; four sisters, Beatrice Arthur of Altavista, Geraldine Dillard of Hurt, Donna (John) Lynch of Chesapeake Beach, Md., Iva (Joseph) Ciccarello of Austin, Texas; three brothers, Eric (Faye) Arthur of Halifax, Wallace (Linda) Arthur of Glen Allen, Terry (Diane) Arthur of Wilmington, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
