Hurt natives publish collection of poetry

Poets and siblings Frances Vaughn and SSgt. John W. “Billy” Atkinson.

Frances Atkinson Vaughn grew up in northern Pittsylvania County and graduated in 1956 from Gretna High School. Recently, she self-published a book of her poetry using the services of Christian Faith Publishing, Inc. based in Meadville, PA. After spending many years in North Carolina, she now lives in Hurt near her two brothers.

Vaughn has written poetry since she was a child and continues to write today. Her book, Reflections of Life, include her life’s work. It also contains several poems one of her brothers, SSgt. John W. “Billy” Atkinson, wrote during the Vietnam War. Vaughn said she is inspired by family members, friends, memories, and her love and faith in God. Many of her poems deal with military themes because her family members have been involved in the service.

Vaughn and Atkinson’s poems share both what it’s like to be back at home with loved ones who were away in the service and what it feels like to be in a war. Vaughn shared that her two favorite poems are one which she wrote for her son’s twenty-first birthday, called “Where Have the Years Gone, My Son,” and also the poem, “A Prayer from One Brother to the Other,” which Billy wrote when he learned that their brother Alvin had been injured.
