“We appreciate the relationship that the Town has with VDOT in regard to transportation improvements for our citizens,” said Altavista Town Manager Waverly Coggsdale. A number of projects are well underway, including the bridge over the Staunton River and Norfolk Southern Railway. The bridge installation is progressing and is on schedule to be completed by May 2021.
VDOT has indicated, “This project will replace the bridge on Route 29 Business at the Campbell County/Pittsylvania County line over the Staunton River and Norfolk Southern Railway.
The structure was built in 1929 and is in poor condition. It has a twelve-month inspection frequency. Considering the age, condition, geometrics and type of structure, the practical and cost-effective solution is total replacement.
The new structure will be a two-lane bridge on approximately the same alignment as the current bridge.”
