A group of Amish driving a horse-drawn buggy was struck from behind by a car on Route 40 around 7:15 p.m. Sunday, leaving the driver dead and two passengers critically injured.
According to Trooper Simpkins with the Virginia State Police (VSP), the family was ejected from the carriage at the time of impact. The driver was pronounced dead on the scene, and the two passengers were transported to the Carilion Hospital in Roanoke in critical condition.
"We've never seen anything like this," Simpkins said.
Simpkins said that the family was a member of the Amish community on Hermosa Road in Mt. Airy. According to a woman in the neighborhood, the community there has organized a large gathering of Amish family members from across the country in honor of the driver.
The investigation is still ongoing, Simpkins said, and charges are pending.
