As glad as residents of Altavista are that the traffic lights in front of Gateway Minute Market blink, allowing them to survey the scene and proceed as desired, they still can’t help but look longingly toward the road untraveled. The blockade indicating that the most convenient route to Hurt is under construction is a tangible reminder that crews are hard at work to make our travels safer.
The bridge that residents remember is gone. There are no visible traces of it and even the foundation in the river bed has been removed. The construction of the new bridge is well under-way, but it has not been without its challenges. Dylan Frazier, from English Construction, commented that there have been some difficulties with drilling shaft foundations and is looking forward to having all of those in place since once the work is above ground, the pace and productivity can pick up a bit.
