Pittsylvania County Economic Development Director Matt Rowe told members of the Staunton River Regional Industrial Facility Authority that plans are in the works for the removal of a smokestack at the site of the former Klopman Mills in Hurt.
The Staunton River RIFA group met in Chatham Friday, April 12 to hear the status of the Southern Virginia MultiModal Park. The park includes the Klopman Mills site in addition to land once used by Burlington Industries.
“We have finally received final documentation for $99,800 from the state for a Virginia brown fields remediation grant,” Rowe said.
The grant is being matched dollar for dollar by the site partners according to Rowe.
By razing the smokestack and silos, Rowe said the demand for the property should increase.
Silos on the property are also slated for demolition according to Rowe.
A date for the demolition work has not been determined.
In addition to the demolition work, plans are also in the works for an additional 500 feet of road to connect the front and back of the property.
