Chilli Willie’s, a fun experience in road-side conveniences, opened on Friday in the building that used to house Bob’s Market located at 6201 Renan Road in Hurt. A motorist passing by who decides to stop will find everything he would expect from a convenience store plus much more. There are games to play, a video playing on a huge wide-screen tv, hand-scooped ice cream and milkshakes, coffee and Cappuccino, beer and wine, tobacco, lottery, an ATM and even cakes and pies from Alma’s Treats, his fantastic bakery supplier from Gretna.
Sometime in the near future when everything is ready, Willie Race, the owner of Chilli Willie’s, says he will also be offering barbecue ribs and chicken, chili cheese nachos and his special brand of chili dogs among other menu items. “My chili is different than most,” Race said. “It has black beans, refried beans and even a few jalapeños in it. It’s good, and people love it.”
Race laughed about the name of his new store. “My nephew Noah named it for me. He’s about 16 now, but when he was nine-years-old, he suggested the name ‘Chilli Willie’s’ as a good name for a hot dog stand.
