National Night Out set for August 6

Excitement continues to build for the National Night Out event set for Tuesday, August 6, starting at 5 p.m. It will be sponsored by the Altavista Police Department which has been hard at work for weeks putting together a fun night that will bring the community closer and let them have the chance to get to know their local police force a little better.

National recording group The Embers will be the entertainment for the night from 6 - 9 p.m.

The night will kick off at English Park in Altavista at 5 p.m. with opening remarks from Altavista Mayor Mike Mattox, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthem by the Altavista High School Marching Band. American Legion Post 36 Honor Guard will post colors and Bishop Wes Witcher from First Church of Jesus in Altavista will have the invocation. Chief Merricks will also introduce the Altavista Police Department.

There is no admission to the event and everyone is invited in the town and community. Free hot dogs, beverages and chips will be provided thanks to an anonymous donor. Several local food trucks will sell food for those not eating hot dogs.

More than 26 organizers will either set up displays or be participating.
