Campbell County Schools announce individualized graduations

Unusual times call for unusual approaches and solutions. Campbell County Public School District has come up with a plan to allow seniors to have a special graduation event without bringing crowds of people together.

“What we’re trying to do is figure out how we can recognize our seniors and all their hard work and accomplishments and get them their diplomas while still complying with social distancing and regulations the governor has put in place,” explained Dr. Clayton Stanley, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction.

The solution: individualized graduation mini-ceremonies. Families will come to the football field of their student’s school, and they will have a scheduled time for their students to receive their diploma and walk across the stage.

Each school has its own times (see below), and students will have a specific time for their own personalized ceremonies. The larger schools will have more days of ongoing graduations because of the logistics of giving so many more seniors their moment on stage.

“We realized that graduation is about families as well as about the seniors, and we wanted a way to accommodate families and still make it a special time for the graduates,” Stanley added about the creative solution.

He also reported that videos with speeches from administration, valedictorian, and salutatorian will be made for each school, and those videos will be aired later in June.

Altavista Combined School: ceremonies will be held on Thursday, June 4, and Friday, June 5, both days 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Rustburg High School: ceremonies will take place June 1st, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., June 2nd, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and June 3rd, 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. There will be a one-hour break each day from noon until 1:00 p.m. Rain make-ups will be scheduled June 4th-6th.

William Campbell Combined School: ceremonies will be held on Saturday, June 6th, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Brookville High School: the school is awarding diplomas at scheduled times on June 2, 3, and 4. Ceremonies will take place 7:45 a.m. - 4:45 p.m., and all students will have a set time within their group of ten students.
