Altavista "Shop with a Cop" will benefit 40 children this year

The Altavista Police Department’s annual Shop with a Cop program will include 40 children this year. Each child will be accompanied by a law enforcement officer during a shopping trip to Altavista’s Walmart.

According to Police Chief Tommy Merricks, officers from the Altavista Police Department will participate in the shopping, potentially along with members of the State Police, probation and parole officers, and Division of Motor Vehicles enforcement officers.

Thanks to some successful fundraising, each child will have a budget of $125 to spend.

Officers and children will go shopping at Walmart in Altavista on December 21. “We have as much fun as the children,” said Police Chief Tommy Merricks of himself and other officers.
