Altavista Y begins current support campaign, goal set for $125,000

The Altavista Area YMCA has begun it’s 2019-20 Current Support Campaign with this year’s public goal set at $125,000. A successful fundraising program allows the YMCA to keep membership and program fees at affordable rates.

Currently YMCA membership dues are among the lowest of any Y in the state and have not been increased in five years.

Financial assistance is available for those in need. The E. R. English Scholarship Fund provides financial aid for all YMCA programs and activities.

Each year volunteers seek contributions through the Current Support Campaign to help offset expenses and balance the $2.9 million-dollar budget. The ability to raise money over and above membership and program fees is the reason the YMCA exists in Altavista and not in other much larger communities.

Altavista remains one of the smallest communities in the United States with a full facility YMCA.

In 1970 Minnie Lane and Christine Frazier contacted the National YMCA to inquire about the possibility of starting a YMCA in Altavista.
