To help slow the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Town Manager, Waverly Coggsdale announced today that Council will use Facebook Live to stream its public meetings going forward. This includes the upcoming public hearing scheduled for May 12, 2020 at 7:00 P.M. on the FY2021 Proposed Budget and Capital Improvements Plan. Both documents can be found at https://www.altavistava.gov/departments/finance/annual-business-reports-budget-2.html.
Citizens are not required to have a Facebook account in order to watch the public meetings. A link to the Town’s Facebook page is provided on the Town’s Home Webpage, www.altavistava.gov. Simply click on the Facebook icon located in the upper right corner of the page and you will be directed to the Town’s Facebook page to view the meetings. You may also enter https://www.facebook.com/TownOfAltavista in a browser to reach the Town’s Facebook page.
Members of the public who wish to comment will be able to do so temporarily by submitting their comments in various ways to the Town Manager. During each meeting, comments will be read into the minutes as if each person were in attendance. If a response is needed, a member of town staff will contact the individual responsible for the comment within 48 hours after the meeting. When the current public health emergency ends, the Town plans to return public comment to the usual format for Town Council as well as its other public meetings.
“Protecting the public’s health must be our top priority during the current crisis and holding Town Council meetings via Facebook Live eliminates the need for people to leave their homes to participate in or watch our meetings,” said Mayor Mike Mattox. “We appreciate everyone’s help and understanding as we all adjust to the changes needed to slow the spread of COVID-19.”
Instructions for Public Participation
To provide public comment on agenda items for public meetings, citizens must provide their full name, address, agenda item, and meeting comment one of the following ways:
➢ Email email@example.com by 5:00 P.M. the Monday prior to the meeting date.
➢ A comment with the requested information may be dropped off in the Drop Box located in the side parking lot at Town Hall by 5:00 P.M. the Monday prior to the meeting date. The box is brown in color and is adjacent to 7th Street.
➢ A comment with the requested information may be mailed to Town of Altavista, Attn. Mr. Waverly Coggsdale, P. O. Box 420, Altavista, Virginia 24517. Please note, the comment must be received the Monday prior to the scheduled meeting.
