UPDATE: Virginia State Police has confirmed that 19-year-old Matthew Bernard is in custody.
Benard ran past reporters in a media staging area and attacked a pastor. Authorities chased him down the street before macing him and using a stun gun. The suspect was naked when apprehended.
Police are investigating a triple homicide in Keeling on Tuesday Morning, according to Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor.
Sheriff Taylor said someone visited a neighbor Tuesday morning and found a body in the driveway. A sweep of the house found two more bodies inside the house. The bodies were two females and a young child, but police couldn’t identify them.
Residents were warned to be on the lookout for Matthew Bernard, 19, last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. The suspect is armed with a rifle and considered very dangerous and appeared to be related to the victims and lived at the same address. Bernard is believed to have fled the scene on foot.
Police have a command post set-up at this time with K-9 units in pursuit and officers patrolling the area. According to Taylor they will bring in aerial support if the cloud cover decreases.
Police deployed reverse 911 calls to alert the neighborhood about the situation.
Several Schools are on lockdown and will remain on lockdown until the scene is cleared according to the sheriff’s office.
A code orange was placed on Dan River High School, Dan River Middle School, Kentuck Elementary School, Southside Elementary School, Chatham Middle School, Chatham High School, Regional Alternative School and The Pittsylvania Career and Technical Center.
Code Orange means exterior doors and teacher’s classroom doors remain locked. Students are not permitted to go outside and the administration monitors the hallways and entrances.
The sheriff’s office is working on providing a photo of the suspect.
The area of Keeling Drive is closed and on one is allowed down the road.
